Norton, Ada A.
Born on February 21, 1864, Ada A. Norton (Alpha 1899/Eastern Michigan) was one of Alpha Sigma Tau’s first three advisors, guiding Alpha Chapter almost from its founding. She was an instructor in the mathematics department at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) until 1930. Ada was initiated into Alpha Chapter in 1899.

Ada served Alpha Sigma Tau in numerous ways. She assisted Effie E. Polhamus Lyman (Alpha 1899/Eastern Michigan) in helping Alpha Sigma Tau become recognized as a national sorority by the Association of Education Sororities (AES). As part of the nationalization efforts, she directed Alpha Sigma Tau’s first National Convention. She also served as the Sorority’s second representative to AES. In addition to her nationalization efforts, Ada installed Beta Chapter, was responsible for writing much of the ritual in the Sorority’s early years, and assisted Alpha Chapter in obtaining its first Sorority house in 1927.

Ada A. Norton’s contributions to Alpha Sigma Tau are recognized at every National Convention, when the Ada A. Norton Award is presented. The award honors an alumna who, through longevity, has demonstrated outstanding service to the Sorority in an effective, creative, and dedicated manner.
